Over the years, bathrooms have gotten bigger and more numerous. In the past, the bathroom was an afterthought, and there would usually be one to every two or three bedrooms. Today's bathroom suite consists of a large dressing area, multiple sinks, vanities, a separate shower and tub, a toilet, and often a matching bidet.

The bathroom suite is as large as any bedroom. The tile is intricate. The fixtures all match and have an air of expense. The idea is to make the room look and feel like the most expensive room in the house (second only to the kitchen). New constructions are focusing on the vanity of the buyer.

If you are in the market to sell your home, keep in mind that you are competing against these larger bathroom suites. Most people can not afford the expense (or disruptions) involved with enlarging the bathroom into a bathroom suite. It is still possible to make the room into an eye catching experience without going to this extreme.

A neutral color is always the safest direction for something that is permanent in any room, but particularly in the bathroom. If bold is your nature, save it for accessories. A bathroom suite not only needs to feel expensive, but it needs to look clean and fresh.

New tile can do wonders in a bathroom. Because the space is typically smaller, it can be a safe project for a DIYer to tackle. It is also possible to use more expensive tiles because of the small space that needs to be covered.

A bathroom suite doesn't have to cost a fortune to look and feel like it does. In new construction, think open and inviting. In a remodel, think crisp and luxurious. This should be a room that people want to spend time in, and with a little thought in the details this is just what will occur.
