Go and view real bathrooms in real homes

When you think that you have a feel for the size and shape of your bathroom you can start thinking about what you want it to look like but don't forgetting that it also has to be functional. The best way to do this is to go and look carefully at bathrooms that are in use already. Use your friends and neighbours in the first instance. Pay them a visit and ask if they would mind you taking a look. This activity can be particularly productive when they have a relatively newly remodeled bathroom because they will be only too pleased to let you see it and talk to you about it. This way you can learn from their efforts.

You can also get bathroom remodeling ideas by viewing houses for sale. Ask your real estate agent to show you properties with nice bathrooms. Don't be put off doing this by the fact that you don't intend to buy because who knows, you might decide that it's easier to move than remodel your own bathroom. It has happened; especially if you have ever done this before and know how much work you are letting yourself in for.

While you are viewing bathrooms make sure that you write notes about the things you see that you like and where you see them. If you don't make notes then you will find it very confusing after viewing more than two or three different bathrooms at different locations.

Take a digital camera with you wherever you go

If you don't have one already then you should invest in a digital camera. It doesn't have to be expensive and you should choose one that's small enough to take with you everywhere you go.

Don't forget to use your camera to record everything that you might want to remember later. Take pictures of bathrooms from all angles and close ups of any features, fixtures, accessories and items of interest. Make a note of what you are snapping so that you will be able to remember where you where and what you saw.

After each viewing transfer all the images you took to your computer and organise them into folders that make sense to you. I will generally make up a folder name that describes what the images are about and the date that I took the photos. Something like this: "/images/23-arcacia-avenue-060706/" This will allow you to find things easily later

Don't forget to imagine the lighting and visualise yourself using the room

The room has to look nice and be functional so it's important that you take the time when viewing a bathroom, to imagine yourself doing things in the room. Don't be afraid to try things out. Sit on the toilet; walk into the shower cubicle etc. Close your eyes for a moment and visualise the room with different lighting.
