Properties of 304 Stainless Steel

Type 304 Stainless Steel is a variation of the basic 18/8 grade, Type 302, with higher chromium and lower carbon content. This lower carbon content minimises chromium carbide precipitation due to welding and its susceptibility to inter granular corrosion. Type 304 Stainless Steel can be exposed continuously to a maximum temperature of 899°C (1650°F) without appreciable scaling. For intermittent exposure, the maximum temperature is around 816°C (1500°F). Types 304 Stainless Steel have very good drawability. Their combination of low yield strength and high elongation permits successful forming of complex shapes.
